ECI is a group for experts. It deals with the media-neutral processing of color data in publication systems. ECI was founded in June 1996 on the initiative of the Bauer, Burda, Gruner+Jahr, and Springer publishing houses. The aims of the ECI include the media-neutral preparation, processing, and exchange of color data on the basis of the color management standards of the International Color Consortium (ICC), the harmonization of data exchange formats between customers and service providers in the publication process, and the definition of guidelines (for example, color space and data format guidelines) for exchanging color data for print media.
